Whether lively or laidback, a Vanuatu holiday is the perfect holiday escape according to Jody Stephenson from Flight Centre Havelock North.
Vanuatu is a great island getaway for those travellers who aren't solely looking for beaches (though there are great beaches too!). There are quite a few activities for the more adventurous with zip lining, snorkelling, diving and horse riding. We did a beach buggy tour which was a lot of fun.
Mele Cascades Waterfall is the perfect complement to the scenic coastline of Vanuatu, with the cool waters and cool mountain air a welcome break from the balmy island temperatures. Just past Mele village, the Mele Cascades Waterfall is a series of rock-pools winding their way through cool lush tropical rainforest. At the top are the spectacular falls cascading down over 50 metres to the rocks and pools below.
I was really surprised at how good the food was in Vanuatu. There are quite a few restaurants to choose from in Port Vila, as well as the dining options offered at the different resorts. Port Vila also has fruit and food markets that are worth seeing
When it comes to swimming my advice is head away from Port Vila to the other Vanuatu Islands. The nicest one that we went to was at Hideaway Island, where the water was clear and far better for snorkelling.
There are some excellent resort options in Vanuatu whether you're travelling as a family or just a couple.
Holiday Inn Resort - This Port Vila hotel is good for families as they have an excellent pool for families plus a separate adults pool. The hotel borders onto a lagoon that you can swim and kayak in. There are a range of rooms and suites, plus some semi-overwater bungalows. There's a lovely big restaurant area with a nice setting in which they serve a delicious buffet breakfast.
The Terraces Boutique Apartments – These apartments are absolutely stunning; very funky and with beautiful furnishings finished off to a high standard. Perfect for couples as they have their own private plunge pools with gorgeous views and full kitchens. There's also a good gym, tennis court and infinity pool on-site, but no restaurant (although there is Mangoes Restaurant next door).
Hideaway – This is a cool little island that you access by ferry which is free if staying here. There's a lovely sandy beach and clear water, plus it's also home to the underwater Post Office and Box. The waters are good for snorkelling with plenty of fish and some live coral - so take your reef shoes! There is a bar and restaurant with a very relaxed and chilled out atmosphere.
Havannah – An amazing resort ideal for honeymooners and romantic getaways. It is about 25 minutes from Port Vila with nothing much close by, which would suit those travellers seeking privacy and solitude. The food can be quite pricey but is an excellent quality, with the restaurant and bar set in beautiful grounds.
The golden sand beach has some of the clearest water in the islands. Turtles and dolphins are regularly seen, and diving and cruise trips can be arranged. This is a great place to get away from it all and unwind.
