An all-in-one destination for food and wine lovers
The first thing that springs to mind when the Barossa is mentioned is wine, and a lot of it. Arguably the most prestigious wine region in Australia, the fertile soil of the Barossa Valley produces iconic old-vine Shiraz at some of the country's most famous estates – Penfolds, Seppeltsfield and Peter Lehmann, just to name a few. Wine tours are one of the key reasons visitors come to the Valley – done on every mode of transport from horses and carts, to mountain bikes, to the standard cars and busses, there's definitely a wine your to suit every comfort level.
When the wine tasting is finally exhausted, visitors to the Barossa should take some time out to explore the local towns in the region. Angaston, one of the oldest towns in south Australia, is filled with vibrant cafes and restaurants and a rich culinary vibe. Australia's first mining town, Kapunda, offers a fascinating historical exploration into the early mining boom in South Australia. Greenock is home to one of the best pubs in the region, as well as artisan markets and some of the best art galleries in the region.
Wine, food, history and culture – it doesn't get much better than this. This is the Barossa Valley.
